A Verdict Demanded: Righteous Judgment and the Identity of Jesus in John 7:14–52
In this lesson, Tony Padgett continues our verse-by-verse study through John 7:14–52, opening with a penetrating observation from the previous session: the people physically closest to Jesus during His ministry—including His own brothers who ate with Him, slept under the same roof, and watched Him daily—did not believe in Him, proving that nearness to Jesus is no guarantee of genuine faith. Moving into the heart of the passage, Padgett traces Jesus' bold, unannounced arrival at the Feast of Tabernacles temple courts—His third visit to Jerusalem—where He taught openly while the chief priests and Pharisees dispatched officers to arrest Him, yet no one could lay a hand on Him because His hour had not yet come. A rich class discussion develops around the biblical call to "righteous judgment," drawing on Jesus' teaching in Matthew 7 about the log and the speck to reveal that honest self-examination—checking both your own life and your motivations—is the indispensable prerequisite to lovingly addressing sin in a fellow believer. The class also examines why the Jewish crowds remained confused and divided about Jesus' identity, showing how deeply held preconceptions about a political-military Messiah blinded them to the spiritual Savior standing right before them, and how that same danger of reading our own expectations into Scripture confronts every generation of believers. The lesson closes with a compelling evangelistic argument: the radical transformation of Jesus' own skeptical brothers, the scattered disciples, and even a persecutor like Saul of Tarsus can only be explained by one historical reality—the risen Christ—and that argument is as powerful today as it was in the first century.
